| | TUTU PUOANE & METROPOLE ORKEST | Wrapped In Rhythm (Vol. 2) | | | With Wrapped In Rhythm, the award-winning singer Tutu Puoane presents an extraordinary project that fuses poetry and music. Inspired by the poems of Lebo Mashile, Puoane transforms words into sound, navigating between jazz, soul, and singer-songwriter traditions. Produced by Larry Klein and honored with three South African Jazz Awards, the second volume will be released in 2025 in collaboration with the Grammy-winning Metropole Orkest.
Tutu Puoane found a deep source of inspiration in Mashile’s poems in A Ribbon Of Rhythm. The texts reflect the reality and emotional world of a young black South African woman of the first post-apartheid generation. The words left a lasting impression on Puoane, and each time she read them, she could already hear the music that would later appear on the second album. From this inspiration emerged a repertoire of new songs that uniquely blend jazz, singer-songwriter sensibilities, and soul. The foundation of this work is the double-album project Wrapped In Rhythm. The first volume was released in March 2024, produced by Larry Klein (Joni Mitchell, Tracy Chapman, Herbie Hancock…) and received three South African Jazz Awards, including Best Female Artist 2024. Volume 2 is being created in collaboration with the Grammy-winning Metropole Orkest under the direction of Jacomo Bairos, with arrangements by Belgian trumpeter Bert Joris. With Wrapped In Rhythm, Tutu Puoane demonstrates how poetry and music can seamlessly merge. Her work brings Mashile’s texts to life in a new dimension, intertwining personal stories with universal themes—a musical statement of profound poetic and emotional power. | | | Manufacturer/importer information | |
